We focus on the timber and what it offers. Bringing function to our creative desires often brings us to Pennsylvania Black Walnut. This tree fell in the Poconos and gave us two nearly identical chatoyant slabs. The vision was to allow each slab to be a fully functional desk when standing alone, but when transposed, the two mirrored desks come together to form a perfectly flush trapezoid shaped dining table.
When sketching this concept, the aim was to have simple legs in order to keep the focus on the table tops. The mirrored fin detailing on the legs provides a satisfying shape to the eye that unifies the look. Additional to the piece are the two rails that the legs of the table nest into, ensuring the two desks remain together and perfectly flush after being gathered together to be used as a single larger table.
After about ninety years in essence and eight weeks in production, this has become one of the studio’s favorite inspirations. The floor rail has been dubbed the “Shoe-Ski” and it underwent many real time revisions before it was able to stand in our admiration. Due to its ability to be situated in different arrangements Gather represents individual stability but also showcases the vital importance of coming together to connect in the human experience.
